Every November, National Diabetes Awareness Month helps bring attention to the growing diabetes epidemic with a month-long initiative that shines a light on a condition affecting millions of Americans—including both adults and children.
It’s the perfect opportunity to learn about diabetes prevention, management, and the importance of maintaining healthy glucose levels. Throughout November, you'll see educational campaigns, events, and resources aimed at making diabetes care more accessible. Each year, key themes like prevention and self-care take center stage, helping people reduce the risk of complications and live healthier lives.
World Diabetes Day
The heart of this awareness month is World Diabetes Day, celebrated every year on November 14. It also marks the birthday of Dr. Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin back in 1922. Their discovery has transformed the lives of people with diabetes, making the month a perfect time to celebrate their work and reflect on how far we've come—and how much further we have to go.
Want to get involved?
Holiday spreads are often filled with tempting dishes that can spike your glucose, but having a plan helps you navigate them more easily. Think about the makeup of your plate. Choose a small portion of starchy or sugary foods and balance them with non-starchy vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This way, you can indulge in your favorites without overloading on carbs or sugar.
Expand your knowledge
One of the best ways to get involved in Diabetes Awareness Month is to learn more about the condition and ways to manage it. Across the Stelo Blog, you’ll find helpful articles on topics ranging from glucose basics to the roles that nutrition, physical activity, and sleep play in optimizing your glucose health.
Take a Risk Test
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) offers a one-minute online test that can help you determine how at risk you might be for developing type 2 diabetes.
Optimize your glucose health
Advances in technology are making it easier and easier to track and understand your glucose data, giving you the information you need to stay on top of your health. Using a glucose biosensor like Stelo can give you 24/7 insight into your glucose levels. This visibility empowers you to make informed choices and establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Show your support
If you’re interested in showing up to attend some events, the ADA has a searchable calendar detailing different gatherings across the country.
The fight goes on
This important month isn't just about raising awareness; it's about advocating for better care, supporting those affected, and empowering communities with the knowledge they need to prevent or manage diabetes. By learning more and spreading the word, we can all play a part in promoting glucose health and improving people’s lives.
